Contact Lens Types
Rigid Gas Permeable
Offer good vision and durability. Although they are still a useful lens choice for many people they tend not to be so popular due to greater initial discomfort than soft lenses.
Daily Disposable Soft Lenses
Are perfect for occaisional wear, such as sports activities, going out or on holiday. They are worn once and then thrown away so require no cleaning or storage making them a good hassle free option.
Monthly Disposable Soft Lenses
Are worn daily for a month, the lens being removed and cleaned each night, then replaced. There are also fortnightly lenses available on the same basis.
Custom Made Soft Lenses
Have more health risks than monthly or daily lenses but are suitable for some prescriptions that disposable lenses are not.
Extended Wear Soft Lenses
Can be slept in for up to a month. Advances in lens materials make these much safer than they were but there is some increased risk in wearing lenses continually for this long. Your Optometrist can advise you whether these would be suitable for you.
Toric Lenses
Correct astigmatism and are available in all of the above lens types.
Presbyopia and Contact Lenses
For adults who require different prescription for distance and near (presbyopia) contact leses can also offer an alternative to bifocal and varifocal spectacles.
